‘Tri Angei’ Valtellina Superiore Sassella DOCG Riserva 2019

The Valtellina Superiore Sassella Riserva is one of Cantina Nera’s historic flagship wines, produced exclusively in the best vintages from 100% Nebbiolo, known locally as Chiavennasca. The vineyards are located in the Sassella subzone of the Valtellina Superiore DOCG, in the municipalities of Sondrio and Castione Andevenno, at an elevation of 300 to 400 meters. The predominantly sandy, well-drained, and moderately deep soils are warmed by the typical “breva,” the dry and moderate wind from Lake Como, which acts as a thermoregulator for the vineyards. After fermentation with maceration on the skins for approximately 10 days, the wine ages for at least 12 months in medium-sized oak barrels, followed by many more months of aging in the bottle. In accordance with the appellation regulations, the wine may not be released for sale until it has aged for 36 months.

 

In the glass, the Sassella Riserva displays a ruby-red color with garnet reflections. The nose is intense and complex, with notes of dried flowers, ripe wild berries, and balsamic hints that reflect the elegance of the Nebbiolo grape at its finest. On the palate, the wine is refined and persistent, with a satisfying and long finish that honors the power and finesse of this exceptional mountain terroir.

 

With its elegant structure and complexity, the Sassella Riserva is an excellent accompaniment to typical Valtellina dishes, red meat, brasato, and aged cheeses. As a gourmet wine with excellent aging potential, it also deserves time in the cellar.
