    What is Orange Wine?

Orange wine is a type of white wine produced by allowing the skins of white grapes to remain in contact with the juice during fermentation. This process, similar to how red wines are made, gives the wine a rich, often amber color and results in more complex flavors and aromas. Almost any white grape can be used to make orange wine, but popular varieties include Pinot Grigio, Sauvignon Blanc, and Vermentino.

    How is orange wine made?

Orange wine is made from white grapes, but in a way that’s similar to how red wine is produced. Normally, the skins of white grapes are removed quickly when making white wine. For orange wine, the skins stay in contact with the juice for days or even weeks during fermentation. This process is called skin contact. Because of this, the wine gets its orange or amber color, along with more structure, tannins, and a fuller flavor profile. This ancient winemaking method originated in Georgia. Today, orange wine is made all over the world, especially by artisanal and natural winemakers.

Which grapes are used for Orange Wine?

A popular choice is Pinot Grigio, known for its fruity and fresh characteristics. When this grape is used for orange wine, it can develop more complex flavors due to skin contact. Another commonly used grape is Sauvignon Blanc, which adds extra depth and structure to orange wines. The Vermentino grape is also an option when making orange wine, often adding an interesting dimension to the wine with its light and fresh taste.

Is Orange Wine organic or natural?

Orange wine is often associated with organic and natural wine, but it’s helpful to know that orange wines can be both organic and natural. Many orange wine producers choose to work organically. Additionally, there are winemakers who focus on natural wine production, adding little to no sulfites. So, in essence, orange wines are produced both organically and naturally.

How long can Orange Wine be stored?

The shelf life of orange wine can vary. This depends on several factors, including grape variety, producer, and how the wine is made. Generally, orange wines have the potential to age well and can be stored for several years, often between 5 and 10 years. Wines made from robust, tannin-rich grapes that are carefully produced with a good balance of acidity and fruit typically have a longer shelf life. When storing orange wine, it is crucial to choose a cool, dark, and stable environment, ideally with a constant temperature between 10-15°C.
