What makes wine from Aragón special?

Wine from Aragón is special because Garnacha has its roots here. The grape almost certainly comes from Spain, and those roots are traced back to the heart of Aragón. Garnacha, called Grenache in France, copes well with extreme weather and gives supple wine with ripe fruit.

Wine has been made in Aragón for a very long time: since the second century BC. Alongside Garnacha, the region grows Macabeo and Tempranillo, among others, supplemented by international grapes such as Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay.

Which wine areas does Aragón have?

Aragón has four appellations (DO): Calatayud, Campo de Borja, Cariñena and Somontano. At around 16,000 hectares Cariñena is the largest, followed by Campo de Borja with over 7,000 and Calatayud with around 5,600 hectares. Calatayud, Campo de Borja and Cariñena mainly produce fresh, light white wines, fruity rosés and somewhat fuller reds.

There is also Bajo Aragón, with municipalities in the provinces of Teruel and Zaragoza. Since 2006 this area has had the status of Vino de la Tierra, one level below the DO. Grapes such as Macabeo, Garnacha Blanca, Garnacha Tinta, Syrah, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon are permitted there.

Which wines from Aragón can you buy at ONWINE?

You can buy wine from Aragón at ONWINE from, among others, Bodega Taberner Amado. The winery is in Nonaspe, at the crossroads of Aragón and Catalonia and between the Matarraña and Algars rivers. What began as a project between two friends, Bernabé and Jordi, grew into a wine venture with family roots. For more than three generations the family has worked this land, using traditional and nature-friendly farming.

The vineyards lie on terroirs where river stones and clay soils meet. The name of the range, Entre Dos Aguas, means 'between two waters' and fits that position between the rivers.

White: Garnacha Blanca from Bajo Aragón

Both white wines are made from 100% Garnacha Blanca, from vineyards 15 to 25 years old on clay and stony soils. The 'Entre dos Aguas' Blanco is made without oak ageing. It is dry, fresh and supple, with white fruit, light citrus and a refreshing finish.

The 'Entre Dos Aguas' Blanco Barrique ages for six months in French oak barrels. It is fuller, with ripe white fruit and subtle oak, and still has fresh acidity.

Red: blends of Garnacha Tinta, Syrah and more

The 'Entre Dos Aguas' Tinto is a blend of Garnacha Tinta, Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon, made without oak ageing. It is supple and balanced, with red and black fruit, light herbs and soft tannins. The 'Entre Dos Aguas' Tinto Barrique uses the same grapes but ages for twelve months in French oak. As a result it is fuller and more layered, with dark fruit, herbs and subtle oak.

The 'M&M' Tinto is made from Merlot and Syrah from vines more than 30 years old and ages for six months in French oak barrels. It is full and round, with ripe dark fruit, herbs and light oak notes.

    Rosé: fresh and fruity

The 'Amanda' Rosado is a rosé of Cabernet, Syrah and Merlot from vineyards older than 25 years on clay and river stones. It is made without oak ageing. It has a pale pink colour, notes of peach and soft red fruit, and is fresh and supple.
