    What is Primitivo?

    Primitivo is a red grape variety primarily found in the Puglia region. It is also found in California (USA) under the name Zinfandel. The name Primitivo comes from the Italian word "primo," meaning "first," which refers to the early harvest of the grape. Primitivo wine is known for its full, powerful taste with rich aromas of berries, plums, and spices, but it can sometimes also have hints of chocolate or balsamic. The Primitivo grapes are often hand-selected because not all bunches produce an equally good yield. This results in concentrated wines of high quality.

    How is Primitivo made?

    The production of Primitivo starts with the harvest, where the grapes are hand-selected. Only the best fruits are chosen for wine production. Since Primitivo often grows in warmer environments, the grapes ripen faster. This rapid ripening results in softer tannins in Primitivo. The Primitivo grapes are vinified through traditional fermentation, where the juice remains in contact with the skins during fermentation. This creates an intense color. After fermentation, the wine is often aged for several months in oak barrels to add spicy aromas. In some cases, Primitivo is also aged in stainless steel tanks to preserve the fruitiness. These young Primitivos can often be stored for 3–5 years in the bottle, maintaining their fruitiness, while oak-aged Primitivos can sometimes be stored for 8–10 years, gaining a fuller structure and releasing more herbal aromas.

    What pairs well with Primitivo?

    Since Primitivo is a powerful and fruity wine, it is often paired with dishes that have a rich and hearty flavor. A good match for Primitivo is grilled meat or vegetables from the BBQ. Think steaks, lamb chops, or pork ribs combined with grilled peppers, eggplant, or zucchini. Primitivo also pairs well with pasta dishes with a rich tomato sauce, such as pasta Bolognese or lasagna. For an appetizer, Primitivo is an excellent match as well. Hard cheeses like Parmesan, Pecorino Romano, or Manchego go perfectly with smoked meats like prosciutto, completing a charcuterie board with Primitivo. Primitivo is a great match for both winter and summer dishes. If you find red wine a bit too heavy for the summer, Primitivo can also be wonderfully enjoyed chilled. Simply place the bottle in the fridge an hour before serving for a refreshing taste experience.

    What about the shipping costs?

    Wine purchased via Onwine comes directly from the winery.
    All wineries pack the bottles themselves and hand them over to our shipping partner. Onwine works with boxes the size of 6 or 12 bottles.

    To guarantee safe delivery, it is therefore also a requirement that orders are always made in multiples of 6 bottles.

    The following shipping costs apply:

    • 6 bottles at the same winery: €6,-
    • 12+ bottles at the same winery: No shipping costs

    You can order from several wineries at the same time. The above shipping costs apply to each individual winery.
