The Saumur Blanc 2023 from Domaine des Ruaults is a fresh, elegant white wine that shows the pure expression of Chenin on calcareous soils. The grapes, from 15- to 20-year-old vines on Turonian calcareous-clay soils, are carefully fermented at low temperature, after which the young wine is further matured in an underground cellar on fine lie over winter. This adds texture and complexity, while the wine is bottled in spring to retain its vibrant character.
In the glass, this Chenin shows bright and radiant with a pale yellow colour and green reflections. On the nose, it opens delicately and subtly with aromas of white flowers such as acacia and hawthorn, complemented by notes of green apple, pear and quince. On rolling, fresh mineral notes of chalk emerge, along with a hint of citrus. The palate is lively and well balanced: fresh acidity supports the fruity profile, in which apple, pear and lemon combine nicely with a gentle hint of honey. The structure is round and creamy thanks to aging on fine lie, with a long, mineral and floral finish.
This Saumur Blanc is already lovely to drink now for its freshness and aromatic finesse, but may develop further over the next two to four years. Served between 8 and 10°C, its fresh character comes out best. A perfect choice for lovers of refined, mineral white wines with depth.
