La Bassaie is an elegant and layered Chenin from the Saumur appellation, from 30-year-old vines on a carefully selected chalky vineyard in Les Hauts Buards. The wine ferments at low temperature and is already transferred to 400-litre oak barrels in an underground cellar during fermentation. There it matures for nine months on the fine lie, with regular bâtonnage. No new wood is deliberately used, so that the pure expression of the terroir remains central.
In the glass, La Bassaie shows golden yellow with sparkling reflections. The aroma is intense and complex, with ripe yellow fruit such as pear, quince and white peach, intertwined with floral notes of acacia and subtle hints of honey and chalky minerality. On the palate, this Chenin is full and silky in texture, with a wonderful balance between freshness, structure and roundness. Lively acidity supports the rich fruit flavours and is delicately complemented by soft notes of vanilla and butter, from barrel aging. The long finish is mineral, lightly toasted and elegant.
La Bassaie is already drinking beautifully now, but also possesses excellent storage potential of five to seven years. Serve it lightly chilled, between 11 and 13 degrees, to make the most of its full aromatic spectrum and round structure. A characterful gourmet white wine that will please connoisseurs and lovers of refined Chenin alike.
