Château Claud-Bellevue 2020 comes from the chalky hills of Castillon Côtes de Bordeaux, where thin clay layers create wines with generosity, tension and perfect balance. The 10 hectares of vineyards, on average 15 years old and planted with merlot and cabernet franc, are sustainably managed to strict HVE3 standards, with no herbicides and green manure for healthy soil. Harvesting took place entirely by hand from 18 September 2020, ensuring that only perfectly ripe grapes found their way to the cellar.
Vinification is intense and artisanal. The wine is fermented with whole bunches, with extraction via rack-and-return and a 30-day cuvaison for maximum depth. Malolactic fermentation takes place in both barrels and tanks, equally divided between new, one-year-old and two-year-old barriques. The wine then ages for 12 months in wooden barrels and a further 12 months in cuves. In total, only 12,830 bottles and 60 magnums were produced, highlighting the exclusive and meticulously crafted style of this cuvée.
In the glass, the 2020 shows a deep colour and an elegant aroma that combines mint, ripe fruit, spices and toasted notes. The palate opens powerful and broad, followed by a refined, structured mid-palate. As the wine develops, it remains remarkably soft while the rich tannins continue to refine. With accolades from the likes of James Suckling (92/100), Decanter World Wine Awards (95/100) and multiple gold medals, Château Claud-Bellevue 2020 is a brilliant example of creamy, powerful merlot in a ripe vintage.
