The Ried Hochgrassnitzberg Sauvignon Blanc is a distinct and elegant wine from a sun-drenched southeastern location in southern Styria. More than 30-year-old vines root deeply in calcareous soils of Muschel limestone and sandy marl, creating finesse, tension and a distinct mineral signature. This combination of terroir, age of vines and careful viticulture is the basis for a Sauvignon Blanc with tranquillity and depth.
After harvest, the wine ferments in large 2,000-litre wooden barrels, so the wood plays only a supporting role. The wine then ages for a year on fine yeasts, which adds extra texture and complexity, and is then rested for another year in stainless steel tanks to further refine. This long ageing gives the wine balance and layering, without losing its fresh core.
In the glass, the wine shows a fine bouquet with flinty minerality and a spicy, elegant aroma. The palate is tight and concentrated, with a long, precise finish. At the table, this Sauvignon Blanc goes beautifully with refined fish dishes, seafood, goat cheese or dishes with green herbs and light creaminess. It also shows its class with veal or poultry with a fresh sauce. A wine for lovers of gourmet, terroir-driven Sauvignon Blanc with character and depth.
