Alicante is an ancient Spanish grape variety with a rich history of travel across the Mediterranean. Over the centuries, it has appeared under many names: Grenache, Cannonau, Vernaccia di Serrapetrona, Tai Rosso, Gamay del Trasimeno. Its genetic heritage, whether in its original form or hybridised, is spread throughout the Mediterranean region. In Narni, this grape variety has found a new ideal home: the clay-limestone soil, rich in fossilised shells, and the warm summers of recent years provide the grape with exactly the thermal stress it needs to ripen to perfection.
The grapes are harvested by hand in September and fermented at a controlled temperature in stainless steel. Ageing takes place exclusively in steel and then in the bottle, to preserve the fruity, pure grape characteristics as well as possible. In the glass, the Alicante is an intense and brilliant ruby red. The nose offers a striking complexity of red fruit at the forefront, with a good balance between alcohol and tannins on the palate. The label, designed by Livia Ducoli, is based on an ammonite found by an ancestor in the mountains of southern Umbria at the end of the 19th century.
Excellent as an aperitif, served slightly chilled. Easy to pair with many dishes from Italian cuisine. Also try it with mature cheeses. Serve at 16°C.
