Malbec is originally a French grape variety, but it gained its worldwide fame in Argentina. Cantina Santo Iolo discovered that this grape variety also finds an ideal home in Narni. The clay-rich soil, full of marine sedimentary material, the warm summers and the cool September mornings promote the perfect phenolic ripening of the grape. The Malbec was planted in 2007, when climate change was scarcely a topic of conversation, but the Ducoli sisters were already thinking ahead to the future.
The grapes are harvested by hand in September and fermented at a controlled temperature in stainless steel. Maturation takes place exclusively in steel and then in the bottle, to preserve the grape’s characteristic traits as much as possible. In the glass, the Malbec is a vibrant ruby red, verging on violet. The nose is floral and evolves into red fruit, before revealing balsamic notes of bay leaf, eucalyptus and peppermint. On the palate, the wine is complex yet fresh, with lively and elegant tannins that lend it length and pleasantness.
Served at 16°C, the Malbec pairs well with many medium-bodied dishes: pasta, meat, cold cuts and roasted vegetables. Slightly chilled, it is also highly recommended with fish dishes such as soups, stews and grilled fish. Excellent as a wine to savour.
