    The History of Liguria

Liguria may be narrow in size, but it’s big in personality. This stunning coastal region, nestled between the sea and the mountains, stretches from the French border to just above Tuscany – and has been growing wine for centuries. The vineyards cling to steep cliffside terraces with breathtaking views over the Mediterranean. Here, winemaking is all about craft, care, and tradition – and that’s exactly what you taste in every glass.

    Famous Wines from Liguria

Liguria doesn’t produce a lot of wine, but what it does make is something truly special. Fresh, light, and often with a hint of sea breeze – that’s Liguria in a glass. Vermentino is the star: crisp, vibrant, and incredibly drinkable. Pigato, a more aromatic cousin, is a little fuller and more complex. Then there’s Rossese, a light, floral red wine with gentle spice – perfect for Mediterranean food and warm summer nights.

    Which Grapes Grow in Liguria?

Liguria is home to native grapes you’ll rarely find outside the region – making it a true gem for curious wine drinkers:

    • Vermentino – fresh, zesty, with a touch of saltiness

    • Pigato – aromatic, spicy, and slightly fuller

    • Rossese – light red, floral, with soft spice

    • Dolcetto & Sangiovese – found inland, in small amounts

    White Wines from Liguria

White wines are Liguria’s pride. The sea breeze, sunshine, and hilly vineyards combine to create wines with real freshness and minerality. Vermentino is ideal with everything from grilled fish to seafood pasta or pesto. Pigato offers a little more richness, perfect with starters or shellfish. These wines are light, lively, and full of coastal charm – just like Liguria itself.

    Red Wines from Liguria

Red wines are rarer here, but worth exploring. Rossese di Dolceacqua is a pale, elegant red with floral notes and soft spice – lovely when lightly chilled. Further inland, you’ll find small plantings of Dolcetto and Ciliegiolo, producing smooth, easygoing reds that pair beautifully with grilled veggies or meat dishes.
