Productomschrijving
This classic product from our cooperative winery pays tribute to the rich history of winemaking in Donnas. In 1971, this wine became the first in the Aosta Valley to receive the Denominazione di Origine Controllata (DOC), a distinction that confirms the quality and authenticity of our wine. The winemaking tradition in Donnas dates back to the year 1200, and the appreciation for these wines has endured through the centuries to this day.
The wine is made from 90% Nebbiolo grapes of the local "Picotendro" variety, known for its small, soft berries. The remaining 10% consists of Freisa Bleuva and Neyret, two indigenous grape varieties traditionally added to deepen the wine's color and soften the Nebbiolo tannins. Although these grapes are now used in smaller quantities, they remain an important part of the wine's unique signature, giving it its distinctive character.
The wine has a ruby-red color with garnet reflections, giving it an elegant appearance. The nose reveals refined notes of forest fruits, complemented by subtle spicy accents. The palate offers a beautiful balance between berry fruitiness, a light spiciness, and a pleasant tannic structure. The finish reveals a delicate hint of almond, ensuring a refined and long-lasting tasting experience. The alcohol content is 13.5% vol., with a total acidity of 5.57 g/l and a dry extract of 27.70 g/l.
The grapes for this wine grow on steep, well-drained slopes facing south to southeast, at an altitude of 350 to 400 meters above sea level. The vineyards are located in the communes of Donnas, Perloz, Pont-Saint-Martin, and Bard, and the soils are rich in gravel, which contributes to the wine's minerality. The grapes are grown using the pergola system, with a planting density of 2,500 vines per hectare and a yield of 70 quintals per hectare. The harvest takes place between mid- and late October.
After harvest, the wine is vinified in stainless steel tanks, after which it ages for twelve months in large 25-hectoliter oak barrels. This oak aging further refines the flavor and enhances the tannins.
This wine is an excellent accompaniment to red meat, braised meats, local Fontina cheese, and aged cheeses. With its rich history and authentic flavor, this wine is a perfect choice for lovers of tradition and craftsmanship who want to discover the unique characteristics of the Valle d'Aosta.
