Château Claud-Bellevue 2021 comes from the chalky hills of Castillon Côtes de Bordeaux, where thin clay layers provide the perfect balance between concentration and freshness. The 10-hectare vineyard is sustainably managed to HVE3 standards, with no herbicides and green manure for vibrant soil life. The blend consists of 70 per cent merlot and 30 per cent cabernet franc, carefully harvested by hand from 5 October 2021. These grapes reflect the power and elegance of a cooler vintage, with a natural tension typical of the terroir.
Vinification is traditional and meticulous. The grapes are fermented as whole bunches, with extraction via rack-and-return and a 30-day cuvaison, exclusively with natural yeasts. Malolactic fermentation takes place in tanks and barriques, divided between new and used barrels. The wine matures for 12 months on barrique, including 50 per cent 400-litre barrels, followed by 12 months rest in cuves. A total of 15,271 bottles and 40 magnums were produced, underlining the exclusivity of this carefully crafted cuvée.
In the glass, the 2021 shows a deep, purple colour and aromatic intensity with notes of mocha, ripe black cherries, spice and floral accents. The attack is soft and supple, after which the wine develops into a full, powerful flavour structure with silky tannins. The fresh acidity extends the finish and gives the wine a special elegance. Château Claud-Bellevue 2021 received rave reviews with 91-92 points from James Suckling and 90 points from Yves Beck, a confirmation of the finesse and length that characterise this wine.
