Primum 2015 from Tenimenti Collespino is a characterful red wine from southern Umbria, produced from a small vineyard of just 1.2 hectares in Narni. The wine is a unique blend of 48% Sangiovese, 33% Alicante and 19% Sagrantino. The grapes are grown on a sloping vineyard at an altitude of 220 metres, facing south-southeast. The calcareous, clay-rich soil of fossil origin, combined with good ventilation and significant temperature variations between day and night, provides optimal conditions for the development of aromatic and well-structured grapes.
The vines were planted in 2006 and are trained using the Guyot system with spurs, at a density of 5,500 vines per hectare. The grapes are harvested entirely by hand during the last ten days of September. The blend of Sangiovese, Alicante and Sagrantino brings structure and character, combined with the fruity and softer qualities of Alicante. Following vinification, the wine matures for ten months in wood, divided between 10-hectolitre casks, tonneaux and barriques.
In the glass, Primum 2015 is a wine with a distinct structure and a characterful Italian profile. The combination of Sangiovese and Sagrantino provides tension and tannins, whilst Alicante contributes softness and colour. Thanks to ageing in various types of wooden casks, the wine has also developed extra depth and complexity. A lovely accompaniment to rich, savoury dishes such as Chianina beef stew and guinea fowl with porcini mushrooms.
