Tenimenti Collespino’s Primum 2017 is a characterful red wine from Narni, in southern Umbria. The wine is a blend of 57% Sagrantino, 27% Sangiovese and 16% Alicante. The grapes come from a small 1.2-hectare vineyard situated on a hill at an altitude of 220 metres. The south-southeast-facing aspect ensures plenty of sunshine, good ventilation and marked temperature differences between day and night. The clay-rich soil of fossil origin contributes to the wine’s character.
The vineyard was planted in 2006 and has approximately 5,500 vines per hectare. The grapes are harvested by hand during the last ten days of September, yielding around 60 quintals per hectare. The blend of Sagrantino, Sangiovese and Alicante produces a wine in which the robust structure and tannins of the first two grape varieties are combined with the softer characteristics and intense colour of Alicante.
Following vinification, the Primum 2017 matures for no less than 20 months in tonneaux. This extended oak ageing lends the wine extra depth and complexity and allows the robust structure of the Sagrantino to integrate beautifully. The result is a powerful yet balanced red wine that pairs well with rich, savoury dishes. It is best served at 16–18°C, for example with cooked meat, cold meats or a hearty Italian meal.
