Piombaia is a family estate near Montalcino, close to the abbey of Sant'Antimo and the Val d'Orcia. It was born from the Rossi family of Montalcino and the Cantini family of Pisa, and is now run by the fifth generation: Vittorio, Francesco and Cecilia.
Since 2008 Piombaia has worked according to organic and biodynamic principles. No artificial fertiliser, chemical pesticides or heavy machinery are used, and horses graze freely between the vines. Here the vineyard is a living whole, together with the undergrowth, the animals and the surrounding forest.
During this masterclass the Brunello di Montalcino, made from Sangiovese Grosso, takes centre stage. The estate also shows how wide-ranging Sangiovese can be, from Rosso di Montalcino to idiosyncratic wines such as Il Dono and Macerato. A warm Tuscan way to end the year, just before the holidays.
