Domaine Luyton-Fleury's Saint-Joseph "Origine" 2023 finds its roots on the steep granite slopes between Mauves and Tournon-sur-Rhône, a historic heart of the Saint-Joseph appellation. This wine is made from Syrah sourced from exceptionally old vines, some more than 60 years old, deeply rooted in poor soils. These very conditions ensure low yields and high concentration, giving this wine its powerful yet refined character. The warm and challenging 2023 vintage ended up producing a remarkably charming and expressive wine.
After harvest, Origine matures for no less than 20 months in oak barrels, a quarter of which is new wood. In the glass, it shows a deep, glossy purple-red colour. The nose is initially subdued, with ripe dark fruit, followed by notes of liquorice and a subtle vanilla note. On the palate, the structure is powerful and serious, with firm but ripe tannins. As the wine opens up, more and more layers and complexity unfold, making it ideally suited to long ageing.
A wine with great ageing potential, this Saint-Joseph develops beautifully over 15 to 20 years. It is best enjoyed with classic dishes such as coq au vin, game or slow-cooked meat dishes. With a limited production of only 3,500 bottles, Origine is a distinct terroir wine that impressively reflects the depth, history and strength of the northern Rhone.
