    The history of Champagne

The history of the Champagne region goes back centuries and is deeply rooted in tradition, innovation, and a touch of serendipity. Wine was already being made here in the Middle Ages, but the sparkling version we know today developed later. In the 17th century, the famous Benedictine monk Dom Pérignon began experimenting with winemaking at the Abbey of Hautvillers. While he was originally trying to prevent bubbles, his efforts accidentally laid the foundation for what would become Champagne.

    Famous styles from Champagne

Champagne comes in a variety of styles based on the grape varieties used and the level of sweetness. Understanding these styles helps you choose the Champagne that best suits your taste and occasion.

    Based on grape varieties

    Blanc de Blancs
Made exclusively from Chardonnay grapes. These Champagnes are typically fresh, elegant, and refined with mineral notes. They are often suitable for aging and make an excellent choice as an aperitif or with light dishes.

    Blanc de Noirs
Produced from black grapes such as Pinot Noir and/or Pinot Meunier. These Champagnes are fuller-bodied, richer in taste, and often show notes of ripe red fruit. A great option for those who prefer a more structured style.

    Rosé Champagne
Created by blending in a small amount of still red wine or through short skin contact. Rosé Champagne is fruity, expressive, and versatile – perfect with salmon, poultry, or red fruit.

    Based on sweetness level

    Brut Nature / Zero Dosage
An extremely dry Champagne with no added sugar. Pure and crisp, ideal for lovers of a natural, unfiltered taste.

    Extra Brut
Slightly less dry than Brut Nature, with a fine balance between freshness and complexity. Contains up to 6 grams of sugar per liter.

    Brut
The most common style. Dry but with enough softness to be widely accessible. Perfect as an aperitif or paired with various dishes.

    Demi-Sec
A semi-sweet Champagne with a rounder mouthfeel. Best suited for desserts, cheeses, or spicy dishes like Asian cuisine.
