    Sud-Ouest wine

Buying Wine from the Sud-Ouest Region of France

The Sud-Ouest is one of the most diverse and lesser-known wine regions of France, located south of Bordeaux and stretching to the Pyrenees. This region is a mosaic of small wine areas, each with its own character.

                          Wine from Cahors

The main grape is Malbec, locally also called "Côt", which produces wines with deep color and firm tannins. The vineyards lie along the Lot River, where terroir and microclimate create elegant and characterful wines.

                          Wine from Madiran

The wines are mainly made from the Tannat grape, known for its power, structure, and aging potential. Thanks to modern winemaking techniques, Madiran wines are now more balanced and approachable. Read all about the Madiran region in our blog: Madiran wines, a hidden gem.

                          Jurançon Wines

The region is best known for its aromatic white wines, both dry (Jurançon Sec) and sweet (Jurançon Moelleux). Typical grape varieties are Petit Manseng and Gros Manseng, which produce expressive wines with fresh acidity and exotic fruit.

What Makes the Sud-Ouest Wine Region Unique?

What makes the Sud-Ouest unique is the wealth of native grape varieties such as Tannat, Malbec (often called “Côt” here), Fer Servadou, and the white Petit Manseng. As a result, the wines are distinctly different from those of more commercial regions. Red wines from Madiran are known for their strength and aging potential, while white wines from Jurançon are often aromatic and lively—sometimes dry, sometimes delightfully sweet.

Many winemakers in the Sud-Ouest work on a small scale and with traditional methods. You can often buy directly from the producer, which not only gives better value for money but also a unique experience: you hear the story behind the bottle, directly from the maker.
