The L'Escaleta 2021 from Bodega Bravo Escos is a powerful and characterful single-vineyard wine made from 100% Cariñena from Torroja del Priorat. The name refers to a historic staircase carved by Carthusian monks, a symbol of tradition and connection to the landscape. The vineyard, situated on brown and black slate soils mixed with clay and alluvial sediments, gives this wine its distinct mineral and energetic character.
The old vines, over 40 years old, are farmed sustainably with a focus on organic conversion. In the cellar, spontaneous fermentation in small tanks is chosen, followed by an eight- to 14-day maceration. The wine then ages for 14 months in terracotta amphorae, ensuring a pure and unfiltered expression of grape and terroir.
In the glass, L'Escaleta shows a deep cherry red colour. The nose opens powerfully with violets, followed by layers of lavender, blackberries and subtle spiciness. As the wine develops, notes of graphite, charcoal and Mediterranean spices appear. On the palate, it is silky yet intense, with lively acidity and ripe tannins that provide structure and length. The finish is long and complex, with an elegant balance of power, freshness and minerality.
