There are few vineyards in the world that produce such consistently fine wine as the Scharzhofberger. The steep Saar slope near Wiltingen is exposed to the wind, surrounded by woodland and blessed with heavily weathered slate soil. Reichsgraf von Kesselstatt owns the crowning glory: the Höchste Pergentsknopp, the uppermost, most concentrated section of the slope. Here, yields are at their lowest, intensity at its highest, and the complexity is a world away from anything you’d expect from an ordinary wine.

Strict, selective hand-picking and a long resting period in the cellar are the only methods the estate employs. The Scharzhofberger does the rest itself. In the glass, it is clear and pale yellow. The aroma is magnificent: salty minerality, earthy spiciness, multifaceted fruit and a rich finesse that already heralds what is to come. On the palate, it is dry, powerful and incredibly long, with a structure that has years, if not decades, of ageing potential.

A wine for special occasions and exceptional food. Or simply as a wine for contemplation for those who wish to understand the greatness of the Saar. Serve at 8–10°C.
