The Les Vercandières Rouge 2023 is the prestigious red Hermitage from Domaine Luyton-Fleury, a family estate that has been cultivating the legendary Hermitage hill in the northern Rhône for four generations. The name of the appellation refers to the knight Henri Gaspard de Sterimberg, who in the thirteenth century went to live as a hermit on this hill after returning from the Crusades. Since then, the granite and gravel slopes of the Hermitage, one of the smallest and most renowned appellations in the world with just 136 hectares, have been known as the spiritual home of the Syrah grape. After maceration, the wine ages for 20 months in French oak barrels, giving it its elegant structure and ageing potential.
In the glass, the Les Vercandières shows an intense violet-ruby with a radiant shine. The nose is seductive and expressive, with red fruit and herbs in the foreground, complemented by peppery spice. In taste the wine is fresh and persistent, with a vibrant structure carried by fine, well-integrated tannins. An elegant, deeply rooted red wine with character and finesse that convincingly reflects its terroir.
With an ageing potential of 15 to even 20 years, the Les Vercandières is a wine that deserves time and attention. Already wonderful with roast venison, grilled red meat and small vegetables, it has all the potential to become even more beautiful with the years in the cellar.
