Champagne Hautbois – ‘Les Leury’ Blanc de Blancs 2020 Champagne Hautbois in Pévy has been in the hands of the same family for five generations. Sandrine and Fabien Hautbois are one of the few houses still working with all five traditional Champagne grapes. These include the almost-vanished Arbane and Petit Meslier. Their champagnes win awards as a result: at the international Gilbert & Gaillard Challenge, their Haut’Dacieuse took double gold. Les Leury is their gem. It is a vintage champagne from a single small, south-facing plot of Chardonnay vines over 30 years old, planted on chalk. The wine is fermented and aged entirely in oak barrels. It is blended with reserve wine from a solera running since 2015, then spends 36 months on the lees. The result is a taut, refined Extra Brut. It shows citrus, white stone fruit, brioche and toasty notes, with creamy depth and a long finish. A champagne for oysters, scallops, or simply a special moment.
DVagar Adegas – ‘Napedra’ Treixadura Granito D.O. Ribeiro In Galicia’s Ribeiro region, Antonio Soto and América González bought their first plots in 1970. Since 2021, their grandsons Antonio and Alberto García have been making their own wine there. They chose the name D’Vagar, Galician for “slowly”. Napedra shows why. They were the first winemakers in Ribeiro to revive a centuries-old tradition: making wine in granite. The Treixadura from their historic Finca Vasqueira ferments and ages for eleven months in granite eggs. These eggs are carved from the granite of that very vineyard. Soil and cellar come together in a single bottle. The grapes are selected by hand, and the vineyard is farmed biodynamically. Only around 2,000 bottles are made each year. In the glass you’ll find striking purity, a fine structure, taut mineral tension and a long, elegant finish. A wine for refined fish dishes, shellfish and gastronomic cuisine.
Weingut Ellwanger – Syrah ‘SL’ Klingenberg The Ellwanger family has been growing grapes in Großheppach since 1514, in the Remstal valley near Stuttgart. Today Yvonne and Sven run the estate, and they farm fully organically. Alongside their classic Riesling and Pinot varieties, they aren’t afraid to experiment, and their Syrah is the finest proof of that. The grapes grow on steep south-facing slopes in Großheppach, on deep Keuper soils. The renowned Falstaff awarded this Syrah 93 to 94 points, which is exceptional for this grape in Germany. Falstaff praises its dark blackberry, ripe black cherry and dark chocolate. It also highlights the firm yet polished tannins and the long, mineral finish. The wine is full and powerful, but never too heavy. A red that proves Germany can do far more than just Riesling.
