Gemischter Satz at a glance What it is: a white wine from several grapes grown in one vineyard, also called a field blendOrigin: Austria, traditionally ViennaGrapes: always several, for example Grüner Veltliner, Riesling, Pinot Blanc and ChardonnayStyle: dry, fresh, light to medium-bodiedFlavour: apple, citrus, white flowers and a spicy noteServing: 8 to 10 degrees CelsiusPairs with: salads, fish, vegetable dishes and Wiener SchnitzelKeeping: best young, within 2 to 3 yearsWhat is Gemischter Satz wine? Gemischter Satz is not a grape but a way of making wine. Different grape varieties grow mixed together in the same vineyard. They are picked at the same time and pressed and fermented together. The blend is created in the vineyard, not in the cellar. This used to be common in Austria: if one variety failed because of the weather, the whole harvest was not lost.
Because the grapes complement each other, a Gemischter Satz is often harmonious and balanced. One grape brings freshness, another fruit or spice.
What does Gemischter Satz mean in English? Gemischter Satz literally means something like mixed planting. In English it is called a field blend: a blend that is created in the vineyard.
Wiener Gemischter Satz The best-known Gemischter Satz comes from Vienna, where it is traditionally poured in the Heurigen, the winemakers' own wine taverns. Since 2013 Wiener Gemischter Satz has been a protected designation of origin (DAC). The rules: the grapes come from one Viennese vineyard with at least three white varieties, harvested and processed together. The largest variety may not exceed 50%, and the third-largest must make up at least 10%.
Winemakers outside Vienna also make Gemischter Satz, just not under the name Wiener Gemischter Satz. The wines in our range come from the Weinviertel and the Thermenregion.
What does Gemischter Satz taste like? The taste depends on the grapes in the vineyard. Gemischter Satz is usually dry and fresh, with green and white apple, citrus, white flowers and a light spiciness. With Grüner Veltliner you often taste a peppery note, with Muskat Ottonel or Sauvignon Blanc more floral aroma, and with Pinot Blanc or Chardonnay more roundness.
Which Gemischter Satz wines are there? Every Gemischter Satz is different, because every winemaker works with different grapes. These are the wines in our range.

Frequently asked questions about Gemischter Satz What is the difference between a Gemischter Satz and a cuvée? For a cuvée, the winemaker makes each grape separately and only blends the wines in the cellar. In a Gemischter Satz the grapes already grow together in the vineyard and are harvested and processed together. The blend is created in the vineyard.
Is Gemischter Satz dry? Usually, yes. Wiener Gemischter Satz at the basic level is always dry.
Is every Gemischter Satz a Wiener Gemischter Satz? No. Only Gemischter Satz from Vienna that meets the DAC rules may be called Wiener Gemischter Satz. Winemakers in other Austrian regions, such as the Weinviertel and the Thermenregion, also make Gemischter Satz.
How long can you keep Gemischter Satz? Gemischter Satz is best drunk young, within two to three years, when it is at its freshest. Store the bottles lying down, in a cool, dark place.
