Prosecco wine
What is Prosecco?
Prosecco is a sparkling wine from the north of Italy, mainly from the regions of Veneto and Friuli-Venezia Giulia. The wine is primarily made from the Glera grape and is known for its fresh, fruity character and elegant bubbles. Prosecco is ideal as an aperitif but also pairs perfectly with light dishes or as a base for cocktails.
Where does Prosecco come from?
Prosecco originates in northeastern Italy, with the core production area located in the hills between Conegliano and Valdobbiadene in the Veneto region. This area is known for its ideal climate and soil conditions for growing the Glera grape. Since 2009, “Prosecco” has been registered in the EU as a protected designation of origin.
Is Prosecco wine?
Yes, Prosecco is officially a sparkling white wine. While the name is often associated with bubbles, there are also still versions without any fizz. Prosecco falls under the wine category, just like Champagne or Cava, but it is made differently — using the Charmat method (second fermentation in stainless steel tanks).
What types of Prosecco are there?
There are different types of Prosecco, based on the level of carbonation and region of origin:
- Prosecco Spumante: The most popular variety with fine, long-lasting bubbles.
- Prosecco Frizzante: Lightly sparkling, with gentler fizz.
- Prosecco Tranquillo: A still, non-sparkling wine – rarer and less known.
There are also quality classifications such as DOC and DOCG. The best Proseccos come from the Valdobbiadene (DOCG) and Asolo (DOCG) areas.
Is Prosecco vegan?
Many Proseccos today are vegan, but not all. During the clarification (filtration) process, animal products such as egg whites or gelatin are sometimes used. Fortunately, more and more winemakers are choosing plant-based or mechanical alternatives. At ONWINE, you can find Proseccos clearly labeled as vegan, sourced directly from sustainable producers.
Pairing Prosecco with Aperol or orange juice?
Prosecco is a popular base for festive cocktails. The most well-known is the Aperol Spritz, made with Aperol, Prosecco, and a splash of sparkling water. Another favorite is the Mimosa – a combination of Prosecco and freshly squeezed orange juice – often enjoyed during brunch. Thanks to its crisp and fruity taste, Prosecco pairs well with citrus and bitters.
At ONWINE, you can order your favorite Prosecco directly from the winemaker, with no middlemen involved. Discover a wide selection of sustainable and artisan Proseccos from Italy, and choose your perfect bubbly for any occasion.
