Product description
'Buio' IGT Toscana Rosso is an intriguing and characterful wine from Tuscany, created in 2017 from a spontaneous inspiration of winemakers Alessandro and Michele. The wine is made from 100% Teroldego, a grape variety that originated in Trentino, but surprisingly comes into its own here on Tuscan soil. The idea arose when there were still some empty barriques available, whereupon the duo decided to experiment with this northern variety. The result was so convincing that it was decided to bottle the wine under a new name: Buio, a reference to both the unexpected character of the creation and the deep, almost black color of the wine.
The vineyard lies at an altitude of 170 meters and is planted on clayey soils with a skeletal structure. Organic principles are followed with a high planting density of 5,000 vines per hectare, which together with the low yield of 1 to 1.5 kilos per plant guarantees high quality. After a careful manual harvest in September, the grapes are gently destemmed and fermented in stainless steel, with a 15- to 20-day skin soak and controlled temperature. The wine is then aged for as much as 24 months in French oak tonneaux, half new and half used, to develop complexity and depth.
In the glass, Buio shows intense garnet red, almost opaque. The nose opens with aromas of red fruits, blackcurrants and blackberries, harmoniously intertwined with fine notes of vanilla and tobacco. On the palate, the wine presents itself full and powerful, with present but well-integrated acidity and a firm tannic structure that provides length and elegance. This wine is ready to drink now but can continue to age for at least another 4 to 8 years. Serve at 18 °C and open the bottle preferably one hour in advance. Perfect to pair with red meat and aged cheeses, but thanks to its depth and concentration also particularly suitable as a meditation wine.
