Elettra is a wine that stems from the ancient tradition of the Elettra play, which has been performed for years at the historic Francesco Torti theatre in Bevagna. Just as the mythical Elettra lives in anticipation of her brother's return, this wine is carried by intensity, emotion and a strong connection to Umbrian history. The grape from which it is made is Sagrantino, an indigenous variety known for its vigour and long ageing time. In the DOCG version, this grape matures for 37 months, but in Mevante's IGT expression, the wine is rather "liberated" and made more quickly accessible, without losing its depth.
The grapes come from 20-year-old vines on hills around Bevagna, at around 250 metres altitude. The soil consists of clay and marine formations with lime and silt, which gives the wine its structure and tension. After maceration on the skins, Elettra matures for 12 months in large French oak barrels and at least another six months in bottle. In this shorter ageing cycle, the wine retains the typical power of Sagrantino, but at the same time gains a more pleasant sweetness of ripe fruit and a nice drinkable balance.
In the glass, Elettra shows a deep ruby red colour. The aroma opens with notes of plum, spice and balsamic, followed by a rich, full-bodied palate that carries the tannins of the Sagrantino grape beautifully. The wine has a long finish with subtle licorice nuances and remains supple and expressive. Thanks to its structure and accessible style, Elettra is an ideal wine for everyday enjoyment as well as for table preparations such as grilled meats, rich pasta dishes and spicy, full-bodied dishes.
