"Semifonte" is an elegant red wine with a distinct character, from high-altitude vineyards at 490 to 550 metres above sea level. The wine is made from 87% Merlot and 13% Alicante Bouschet, grapes grown on rich soils of sandstone, clay schist and marl. The 20-year-old vines, with low yields per plant, produce concentrated fruit and complex aromas.
A controlled 10-day alcoholic fermentation in stainless steel vats is followed by a lengthy 25- to 30-day stillage to achieve maximum extraction of colour and flavour. Malolactic fermentation takes place in stainless steel, after which 70% of the wine matures for 18 months in large 30-hl barrels and 30% in French oak tonneaux of second passage. After bottling, the wine rests for at least another 12 months in bottle, contributing to its refined balance.
In the glass, Semifonte shows with a deep red, purple colour. The aroma is rich with spiciness, red fruit and a hint of nuts. On the palate, the wine is velvety and well-balanced, with a lingering finish that continues to tantalise the palate. This wine comes into its own with roasted and grilled white and red meats, game dishes and mature cheeses. A versatile Tuscan with depth and refinement, perfect for lovers of characterful wines.
