Mevante Montefalco Sagrantino DOCG comes from the hills around Bevagna, where the vineyards are 250 metres above sea level with a southeast exposure. This is the historic heart of Umbria, where Sagrantino has thrived for centuries. The 20-year-old vines grow on soils of clay, interspersed with marine sandstone formations, river deposits and loess. This varied terroir gives the wine its powerful structure, intense colour and pronounced aromatic depth. The grapes are hand-picked from the last week of September to select only perfectly ripe fruit.
In the cellar, the wine undergoes a long maceration on the skins, followed by an exceptional ageing process: 24 months in large French oak barrels and then at least 12 months of bottle rest. This prolonged ageing is essential for Sagrantino, a grape known for its high tannins and natural intensity. The vinification softens the wine's powerful backbone while highlighting its noble structure and aromatic complexity. Total production is only 5,000 bottles a year, underlining the exclusivity of this cuvée.
Montefalco Sagrantino opens with a deep ruby colour and powerful aromas of plum jam, spices and balsamic. On the palate, it shows impressive richness, with firm but ripe tannins and a long finish reminiscent of liquorice. This is a wine with personality and length, ideal for lovers of powerful red wines with storage potential. It comes out perfectly with slow-cooked meat, lamb dishes, game and mature cheeses.
