Product description
Schioppettino is not a wine that immediately reveals itself. The name sounds quirky and that is no coincidence. In the hills of Friuli, where this grape has belonged for centuries, it was always seen as something mysterious. Spicy, powerful and a touch rebellious. Dario Coos treats Schioppettino with respect for that character. No excess, no trappings, but space for the grape to tell its own story.
After a brief cold soaking to capture the typical spiciness, the wine quietly ferments in stainless steel. This is followed by ageing in wood, not to dominate, but to give depth. In the glass, the wine shows a bright ruby red colour. The aroma is intense and recognisable, with black pepper, spiciness and ripe red fruit. With some time in the glass, this shifts towards plum and subtle earthy notes. The palate is supple but decided, fresh in texture and elegantly balanced.
This is a wine that calls for food and company. It feels at home with grilled meat, game dishes or a board of mature cheeses, but also with long evenings when conversation is more important than the clock. Schioppettino by Dario Coos is not everyone's friend, which is precisely why it is so captivating. A wine for those who dare to be curious and appreciate character.
