This Crémant Grande Reserve 2020 from Weingut Bietighöfer is a refined sparkling wine made in bottle using the classic method. It is based on carefully selected white grapes from around 25-year-old vines, from chalky Muschel limestone soils in the Palatinate region. This soil gives the wine its fresh tension and elegant structure, while the long ageing ensures depth and refinement.
On the nose, the Crémant is open and inviting, with aromas of fresh apple and white blossom, followed by notes of hazelnut and toasted bread. These subtle autolytic notes betray the traditional bottle fermentation and give the wine a serious but approachable style. The mousse is fine and lively, contributing to an elegant first impression.
On the palate, the wine is tight and precise, with highly integrated acidity and a distinctly dry style (brut nature). The aftertaste is fresh, slightly nutty and persistent, making this Crémant not only an excellent choice as an aperitif, but also surprisingly usable at the table.
