Product description
Sizzano is a name that gives even connoisseurs pause for thought. Yet this is one of the oldest and most distinctive appellations in Alto Piemonte, situated at an altitude of around 260 metres in the village of the same name, just a stone’s throw from Ghemme. Cantine Pietraforata produces a wine here that combines the best of two grape varieties: the structure and complexity of Nebbiolo, and the floral, zesty character of Vespolina.
The blend of 70 per cent Nebbiolo and 30 per cent Vespolina is harvested by hand in the first half of October from the alluvial, clayey soils underpinned by the volcanic subsoil of Valsesia. Following gentle pressing and malolactic fermentation, the Sizzano matures for two years in tonneaux, followed by six months in the bottle. This combination of barrel and bottle ageing gives the wine a maturity and aromatic complexity that one would expect from a much longer ageing period.
The Sizzano has a deep ruby red colour with garnet highlights. The nose is intense and alluring: forest fruits, violets and a spicy, slightly herbaceous character that betrays the Vespolina. On the palate, it is dry, harmonious and slightly tannic, with a persistent, long finish. Serve it at 16 to 18 degrees after at least an hour’s decanting and pair it with mature cheeses, roasts and traditional Piedmontese stews. With a ageing potential of over 15 years, the Sizzano is a wine to open now and to lay down for the future.
