Locche is a toponym, a name inscribed upon the landscape. The vineyard in that specific location within Ghemme has something distinctive about it: a lower yield, a longer maceration on the skins, followed by five years in barriques and tonneaux. The Vigna Locche is the wine for which Pietraforata gives everything the vine has to offer, nothing more and nothing less.
The blend is identical to that of the Ghemme D.O.C.G.: 90% Nebbiolo, 9% Vespolina, 1% Uva rara. But the vinification is more intensive. Following gentle pressing, there is a post-maceration period of 15 to 20 days on the skins, which significantly enhances colour extraction and the grip of the tannins. The wine is then aged for five years in small barrels, after which it stabilises for a further six months in the bottle. The result is a Ghemme with greater depth, more reserve, and an ageing potential of over thirty years.
In the glass, the Vigna Locche is darker than its counterpart, with a deep ruby red that glows in the light. The nose is intense and layered: blueberries, plum jam, blackberries and raspberries, with a deeper, more mineral undertone than the standard Ghemme. On the palate, it is dry, warm, elegant and long, with tannins perfectly balanced against the fruit. This is a wine to lay down and open on the special occasion it deserves.
