Nebbiolo as a rosé is a minor revelation. Anyone who thinks this grape is only at its best in the form of Barolo or Ghemme has not yet tasted the Orezza. Cantine Pietraforata lets the king of Northern Piedmont shed his formal attire and reveals his fresher, lighter side: a rosé bursting with citrus, soft fruit and an elegant, briny finish.
Production begins with cryomaceration and a brief, chilled skin contact lasting just two hours – just enough to extract colour and aroma without activating the tannins. This is followed by a slow, cold fermentation to preserve the fruity notes as much as possible. The result is a wine that matures for five months in stainless steel, remaining completely pure and clear, without any influence from wood. The hand-harvest in late September ensures a perfect balance between ripeness and acidity.
The Orezza has a delicate pink colour with orange highlights. The nose is delicate and aromatic: small red fruits, citrus, pink grapefruit and a hint of white peach. On the palate, it is fresh and savoury, with a pleasant smoothness and a clean, thirst-quenching finish. Serve it chilled at 10 to 11 degrees and drink it preferably within two to three years of harvest, when the citrus character is at its best.
