Product description
Ghemme is one of the quietest big names in Piedmont. Whilst Barolo and Barbaresco draw all the attention to the south, here in the north, on the hills at the foot of Monte Rosa, a Nebbiolo is maturing that is at least as complex and long-lived. Cantine Pietraforata’s Ghemme D.O.C.G. is a wine that shouts nothing and whispers everything, crafted with the tranquillity befitting a place that has known its worth for centuries.
The blend of 90% Nebbiolo, 9% Vespolina and 1% Uva rara is harvested by hand in the first half of October, when the grapes have fully ripened on the clayey, alluvial soils of Ghemme. After vinification, the wine matures for no less than five years in large 25-hectolitre wooden casks and in tonneaux, after which it is left to settle for a further six months in the bottle. This lengthy ageing allows the tannins time to integrate and the wine to develop its characteristic velvety texture.
In the glass, the Ghemme displays a deep ruby red colour with garnet highlights. The nose is intense and complex: blueberries, blackberries, raspberries, and a spicy undertone that betrays the volcanic soil. On the palate, it is dry, warm and enveloping, with well-balanced tannins and a long, refined finish. Allow it to breathe for at least an hour before serving and feel free to keep it for twenty years or more: the Ghemme from Pietraforata delivers on its promise.
