Vallone is a new challenge for the Gallo family: a Nebbiolo produced entirely in Montabone, where this grape variety is rarely found. The vineyard, one of the smallest of the estate's 20 hectares, sits along the steep Fossello road and is part of the Vallone complex, a hillside opposite the winery that is as steep as it is generous in terms of grape quality.
The hand harvest takes place at the end of September and beginning of October. After destemming, the wine ferments in cement vats on the skins to extract the right colour, tannins and aromas. After malolactic fermentation, half the wine goes into new French oak barriques of 300 litres for 13 months, while the other half ages in cement. The two parts are then blended, rested for a month and bottled. The result is a harmonious, easy-drinking and balanced wine in which the grape variety and the terroir of Montabone are clearly recognisable: fresh, mineral and elegant. In the glass, Vallone is an intense ruby red. The nose offers dried roses, violet, pepper and plum jam. On the palate it is fresh, mineral and elegant with soft tannins.
Vallone is excellent with all meat dishes or oven-baked lasagne. Already enjoyable to drink now, it also has fine ageing potential. Serve at 16-18°C.
