Mevante Montefalco Rosso DOC comes from the Bevagna hills, where the vineyards are 250 metres above sea level with a southeast exposure. This position creates a perfect balance between sunshine and freshness, which is essential for the grapes that make up this wine: 80 per cent Sangiovese and 20 per cent Sagrantino. The 20-year-old vines grow on soils of clay, interspersed with marine and sandstone formations, river deposits and loess. This rich and varied terroir gives the wine its recognisable structure, depth and aromatic richness.
After the manual harvest, which starts in mid-September for the early-ripening parcels and early October for Sangiovese and Sagrantino, the wine undergoes maceration on the skins. It is then aged for eight months in stainless steel and in bottle, maintaining its fresh fruit expression and harmonious structure. Everything is carried out with an eye on authenticity: the wine must show the character of Montefalco, with tension, depth and a lively core of red fruit. The total production is 15,000 bottles, highlighting the artisanal character of this cuvée.
Montefalco Rosso presents itself with an intense ruby red colour and violet hues. On the nose, it opens with aromas of blackberries, blackcurrants and jam, followed by subtle spicy and ethereal notes. On the palate, the wine is broad, harmonious and full-bodied, with ripe fruit that reverberates long on the finish. The combination of Sangiovese and Sagrantino provides freshness, grip and extremely enjoyable drinkability. A versatile wine that is excellent with red meat, poultry, pasta dishes with rich sauces and mature cheeses.
