Medera is a light but characterful red wine from the hills of Valcalepio, in which Castello di Grumello breathes new life into a rare local grape. The vineyards lie on east-facing clay soils around 200 metres above sea level. The cool mornings and alpine breeze give the wine its fresh tension and subtle mountainous signature, while the sun provides juicy, ripe fruit.
The wine is made from 100% Merera, from mass selection. Traditional destemming is followed by temperature-controlled fermentation at 26-28 °C in stainless steel, with 10 days of maceration and pigeage for colour and soft structure. Malolactic fermentation and ageing also take place in inox, keeping the fruity, uncomplicated character clear. After bottling, the wine rests in bottle for another 1-3 months.
In the glass, Medera shows a vibrant purple colour. The nose is playful with juicy red fruit and a distinctive touch of pink pepper. On the palate, the wine is fresh and drinkable, with clean, sincere flavours, slight spiciness and a subtle alpine accent in the finish. An uncomplicated but interesting red wine that invites the next glass.
