Colle Calvario Riserva is the cru of Castello di Grumello and comes from the only official MeGA subzone (complementary geographical origin) within Valcalepio. The vines at Colle Calvario are over 40 years old and grow on marly limestone soils with a south to south-east exposition at 300-350 metres altitude. Low yields (±1 kg per plant) and altitude give this wine its intensity, structure and impressive ageing power.
The blend consists of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon and 40% Merlot. Traditional destemming is followed by temperature-controlled fermentation at 26-28 °C in stainless steel, with a very long maceration of up to 90 days with initial remontage and pigeage for maximum extraction and depth. Malolactic fermentation takes place in inox. The wine then matures for 12 months in new French oak barriques (first passage). After blending, bottling and 5-7 months of bottle aging, the cuvée is released with a powerful but refined structure.
In the glass, Colle Calvario is deep ruby red. The nose shows ripe red plums and berries, followed by spicy accents of spices, bitter cocoa and tobacco. On the palate, the wine is full and warm, but at the same time remarkably fresh, with a layered structure, ripe tannins and a long, lingering finish. A seriously storable Valcalepio Riserva with cru character.
