Lagrein is South Tyrol’s premier red grape variety, and Kellerei Sankt Pauls produces a lovely, approachable wine from it. The grapes grow on heat-retaining moraine soils in San Paolo, at altitudes of between 200 and 400 metres, where this indigenous grape variety has been at home for centuries.
The grapes are macerated and fermented at a controlled temperature in stainless-steel tanks. In the glass, the Lagrein is dark and deep in colour. The aroma is typical and recognisable: wild forest fruits, violets and dark chocolate. On the palate, it is tannic and powerful, yet fresh. The tannins are present but not overpowering, making it very drinkable despite its strength.
An excellent accompaniment to braised meats and game dishes. Serve at 16–18°C.
The wine comes directly from the winemakers, they send the bottles themselves.
