The Ruwer is the forgotten side valley of the Moselle, but for connoisseurs it is one of the most exciting. In the cool foothills of the Hochwald, just behind Trier, Reichsgraf von Kesselstatt has been producing Riesling from the Kasel vineyards for centuries. The deep-rooted Devonian limestone with quartzite layers and the fresh microclimate give the grapes here an unparalleled sharpness, spiciness and expressiveness.
The wine is taut and straightforward, with a cool bouquet typical of the Ruwer. Earthy spiciness, minerality and a striking acidity are central to its character. On the palate, it is powerful, almost vibrating, with a compelling depth and long ageing potential. In the glass, it is clear and pale yellow. The nose offers earthy herbs, slate and citrus. On the palate, it is energetic and taut, with a persistent, penetrating finish.
Excellent with fish and lightly spiced dishes. Also wonderful for laying down for a few more years. Serve at 9–11°C.
