Product description
The Sottomonte San Pietro vineyard sits at roughly 260 metres above sea level in Ghemme, with twenty-year-old vines rooted in clay-loam, alluvial soils that owe their mineral character to the Valsesia supervolcano. This is a Ghemme that doesn’t try to impress — and yet it does, through the purity of its fruit, the grip of its tannins, and a finish that lingers long enough to remind you that you’re drinking something genuinely special.
The 100% Nebbiolo is harvested by hand in the first half of October and then matures for two years in 25-hectolitre French oak barrels, followed by more than six months in bottle. Those are not small numbers for a wine that nonetheless remains approachable and well-balanced. The combination of elevation, cool night temperatures, and volcanic subsoil produces a grape that ripens slowly and builds its complexity layer by layer.
In the glass, the Sottomonte San Pietro is a deep ruby red with garnet tints. The nose brings violets and red plum, fresh and precise. On the palate it is dry, medium-bodied, and lightly spiced, with notes of red cherry and raspberry, balanced tannins, and a long, clean finish. Uncork at least one hour before serving at 16 to 18 degrees and pair with mature cheeses, roasted meats, or the classic braised dishes of Piedmontese tradition. With a cellaring potential of more than twenty years, it is equally at home on the table tonight or at the back of the cellar.
