Product description
Clay amphorae are among the oldest wine vessels in the world. For thousands of years, winemakers across the Mediterranean, the Caucasus, and the Middle East fermented their grapes in amphorae, long before oak barrels or stainless steel tanks were invented. Burghof Oswald revives that tradition in Rheinhessen, combining it with two classic Bordeaux grape varieties: Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. The result is a red wine that feels both ancient and entirely contemporary.
The grapes macerate for three months in a clay amphora, an exceptionally long period of skin contact that gives the wine depth, texture, and colour. They are then pressed using a traditional wooden basket press, a gentle technique that preserves the elegance of the fruit. The wine then ages for eight months in oak barrels, allowing the tannins to polish and a subtle wood complexity to develop. The result is a dry red wine with just 0.5 g/L residual sugar and a full alcohol content of 13.5%, awarded the Goldenen Kammerpreismünze.
In the glass it is deep in colour, rich, and structured. The nose combines ripe dark fruit, blackberry and plum, with a hint of earthiness and spice that betrays the amphora ageing. On the palate it is full-bodied, with firm but refined tannins and a long, warm finish. Ideal alongside red meat, game dishes, or aged cheeses. Serve at 16 to 18 degrees.
