Brunello di Montalcino is one of Italy's most respected wines, and Piombaia is one of its most principled producers. The organic estate in Montalcino works without added technology, in the rhythm of the seasons and the grape. The 2021 is made from 100% Sangiovese Grosso, harvested by hand in crates at the beginning of October, at the precise moment when the grape has reached the balance that Brunello demands.
The winemaking is radically honest. Spontaneous fermentation in stainless steel tanks without temperature control, with a maceration of fifty days on the skins. That long contact time gives the wine its structure, depth, and ageing potential. It then ages for twenty-four months in 30-hectolitre Slavonian oak barrels, followed by four months of bottle ageing. No shortcuts, no tricks: only time and patience.
In the glass it is deep and complex, with the typical development that Brunello only truly begins to show after years. Fresh, tannic, and with a long finish that calls for a fine cut of meat or aged cheeses. A wine to put away and rediscover when the moment is right. Serve at 18 degrees, ideally after airing.
