Domaine Gilg's 2023 Pinot Noir Élevé en Barriques shows a more powerful and complex side of Alsatian Pinot Noir. The grapes grow on marno-limestone-rich soils on south-facing slopes around Mittelbergheim, at altitudes between 220 and 350 metres. This location ensures optimum ripening and concentration. The vineyards are farmed organically, with mechanical tillage, natural vegetation between the rows and only organic fertilisation. The grapes are harvested by hand and carefully selected so that only healthy and perfectly ripe bunches enter the cellar.
After harvesting, the grapes are destemmed and macerated for six to eight days, followed by pressing and alcoholic fermentation. The wine then also undergoes malolactic fermentation, which gives it a rounder structure and more complexity. The wine then ages for 12 months in Burgundy oak barriques, after which the different barrels are assembled. This ageing gives the wine extra depth and subtle wood tones without overpowering the fruit.
In the glass, the wine shows a deep garnet red colour. The bouquet opens with ripe red fruits, complemented by elegant notes of vanilla and light toasted wood from the barrique ageing. On the palate, the wine is supple and harmonious, with soft, silky tannins and a nice balance between fruit, structure and wood influences. This Pinot Noir is an excellent match with game dishes, red meat or mature cheeses and can also continue to age in bottle for several years.
