Product description
The Etna Rosso Senecio 2024 is the latest vintage of Casale 120’s flagship wine, sourced from a single vineyard in Contrada Picciolo, Rovittello, on the northern slopes of Mount Etna at an average altitude of 670 metres. The historic terraces, with their dry lava-stone walls, date back to 1860 and are nestled between the lava flows of 1911 and 1923. The vines are between 80 and 120 years old, trained using the traditional alberello method, each supported by a chestnut stake from Mount Etna. Following a manual harvest in mid-October, the wine ferments using selected yeasts, with pumping over and pigeage during a 6-day maceration period. Ageing takes place entirely in stainless steel tanks for 12 months.
The 2024 vintage will be remembered as a testament to the resilience of the old vineyards. Despite being one of the driest years in two decades, the volcanic soils of Mount Etna retained their remarkable ability to retain deep-seated water, keeping the grapes in excellent condition. The altitude acted as a natural thermostat during the summer heatwaves, ensuring the slow, late ripening that is so characteristic of Nerello Mascalese. In the glass, the Senecio 2024 displays a medium-intensity ruby red colour. The nose is intense, with red fruit and floral notes. On the palate, the wine is fresh, mineral and full of soft, young tannins.
The Senecio 2024 is a versatile table wine that pairs excellently with grilled red meat, lamb chops, pasta with meat sauce and semi-mature cheeses. Its fresh minerality also makes it a great choice with charcoal-grilled fish or a platter of mixed antipasti.
