The Etna Rosso Senecio 2020 is Casale 120’s first official vintage under the Senecio name, sourced from Contrada Picciolo in Rovittello at an altitude of 670 metres. The centuries-old vines, ranging from 80 to 120 years old, are organically cultivated using the alberello method. Following a manual harvest on 15 October, the grapes are macerated on the skins at 23–26°C. Ageing takes place in stages: 8 months in stainless steel, followed by 60% in third-use French oak barriques for 9 months, and a minimum of 12 months’ bottle ageing. A total of 1,500 bottles were produced, including 200 magnums.
The 2020 vintage was characterised by a cold winter and a mild spring, resulting in balanced growth cycles and healthy, well-ripened grapes. The harvest was completed on 15 October. Thanks to normal climatic conditions, this vintage is characterised by its great finesse and minerality. In the glass, the Senecio 2020 displays a medium-intensity ruby red colour, typical of Nerello Mascalese. The nose is intense, with red fruit, floral notes, a hint of toasted aromas, herbs and black pepper. On the palate, the wine is fresh and delicate, with ripe fruit, balanced tannins and a long, spicy finish full of character and finesse.
The Senecio 2020 is at its peak and pairs beautifully with game such as venison and wild boar, stews, mature cheeses and dishes featuring truffles or mushrooms. It is also an excellent choice for a festive dinner or as a special bottle for a special occasion.
