The Etna Rosso Senecio 2022 comes from Contrada Picciolo in Rovittello, on the northern slope of Mount Etna at an altitude of 670 metres. The historic terraces, planted with vines aged between 80 and 120 years, are organically cultivated using the traditional alberello method. Following a manual harvest in mid-October, the grapes are macerated on the skins for 15 days at 23–26°C. Ageing takes place for 8 months in stainless steel, followed by 8 months in third-use French oak barriques, then a further 6 months in stainless steel and at least 1 year of bottle ageing.
The 2022 vintage was characterised by a warm summer with below-average temperatures in August and good rainfall. Autumn brought beautiful dry weather, which contributed to good acidity and more intense colours. The harvest was completed in the first half of October with a lower yield than usual, but with ripe and full-bodied grapes. In the glass, the Senecio 2022 displays a medium-intensity ruby red colour. The nose is intense with strawberry and cherry, interspersed with a floral bouquet. On the palate, the wine is fresh and mineral, with young tannins and a long finish.
The Senecio 2022 pairs excellently with stews, grilled red meat, game such as venison or duck, mature cheeses and savoury pasta dishes. Its fresh structure and ripe fruitiness also make it a good accompaniment to dishes featuring mushrooms or truffles.
