Almost 200 years ago, the first French vines were planted in the Val di Comino. In 1999, Cabernet di Atina was granted official DOC status. The Valle ‘Scura Vino Rosso IGT is the more approachable red counterpart to the Riserva — less oak ageing, slightly lighter in style, but certainly not lacking in character. The grapes are gently pressed and ferment naturally in concrete vats.
In the glass, the wine is an intense ruby red with purple glints. The aroma is floral and alluring: wisteria, red berries and a hint of undergrowth give it a fresh, almost playful nose. The limestone soil at 600 metres also lends it that mineral freshness typical of I Ciacca. On the palate, it is savoury and pleasant, with a fresh acidity and soft tannins that make it very drinkable. The finish is smooth and pleasant, never heavy.
A lovely, everyday red wine that’s perfect for opening up straight away. Delicious with pasta, red meat, poultry or a simple cheese platter. Serve at 14–16°C.
