Product description
The Blu Elixir 2021 is the 2.0 version of a legendary limited edition from 2015, when the estate still owned an old Merlot vineyard. That original wine was an extraordinary blend of overripe Merlot, Barbera and Syrah, so successful that it sold out immediately. However, the Merlot vineyard was grubbed up after that harvest. For years, the estate searched for a way to create a successor to the Blu Elixir. This was found in overripe Grignolino, which replaces the Merlot in the blend and gives it a distinct, more elegant character. Only 1,976 bottles were produced.
After a period of overripening on the vine, the Grignolino, Barbera and Syrah fermented together in a single vat at 28°C, followed by malolactic fermentation in stainless steel. The wine then matures for 30 months in French oak barriques and a further 24 months in bottle before release in September 2026. In the glass, it is an intense ruby red with violet reflections verging on garnet. The nose offers red fruit, cherry, maraschino cherry, berries and, as it develops, exotic fruit, with spicy notes of vanilla and toasted aromas. On the palate, it is powerful, smooth and opulent, with an extra touch of elegance and freshness thanks to the Grignolino.
Pair with rich red meats and cheeses with a good fat content, such as Camembert, Gorgonzola and blue cheeses. Serve at 18°C.
